Review: Food & Farming
Firstly, this book is in comic format which makes it suitable for all age groups and non-avid readers. The artists have done a tremendous job in recreating the scenes from real life experiences.
The book is about the past & present struggles of farmers & peasants in India. Despite being the producers of food, many farmers & their families go hungry and live in poverty! What can explain this irony? How did the imposition of neoliberal policies affected millions of Indians directly and indirectly? What are the origins of Food Security Act in India and what are the struggles behind it?
The book takes the reader behind the curtains of the food market and introduces how such policies impact food production and distribution. In recent days, there is a direct attack on government’s public funding reducing it to the status of freebie culture and ridiculing the whole idea of public spending. I am sure, reading this book would change their perspective on procuring and distributing subsidized food through the Public Distribution System.
