This is one of many “container restaurants” located in a semi-outdoor mall of different restaurants in metal shipping containers called “La Pradera”

This is the only shop in the entire Pradera that has a vegan item explicitly listed on their menu as “vegan” (actually, they had two “arepa vegana 1” and “arepa vegana 2”).

I got “arepa vegana 2” for $4.10
…but minus 2 stars because they served it in plastic and on a styrofoam plate.

Advice to management: Use paper. Don’t use plastic. Don’t use styrofoam.

They had a tasty (vegan-possible) burger. Nothing on their menu is vegan. They do have a vegetarian burger on their menu, and the staff knew what vegan is. They said that the burger is served with cheese and mayo with eggs. They said the bread was vegan. So, I was able to order the vegetarian burger as vegan (por favor, sin queso y sin mayo).

Combo (with a plastic-only drink), fries, and burger was $6.
…but minus 2 star because they still gave me mayo on the side (I asked “que es?” and they said it was mayo, then quickly removed it from my tray), and I honestly wasn’t sure if they omitted the egg mayo on the burger itself.
…and minus 2 stars because they put it on a plastic sheet. And drinks only came in plastic bottles.

Advice to management: Use paper instead of plastic. And add one vegan burger to your menu. And train your staff to know what “vegan” means.

They had a tasty (vegan) falafel sandwich wrapped in biodegradable paper.

…but minus 3 stars because they put it on styrofoam plates and the sauces in plastic

Advice to management: just use paper cups for condiments and (if you really must), a long sheet of paper on the tray. So everything is biodegradable and plastic-free.
If you’re looking for a place to recycle electronics or tyres in central Quito, look no further than Laboratorio de reciclaje at La Carolina park (Avenida de los Shyris y Avenida Portugal).

Entrance of Laboratorio de reciclaje a La Carolina Park
It took me a very long time to find a place where I could properly recycle my bicycle tyres. I was happy to discover that Laboratorio de reciclaje works with Ecocaucho, who recycles used tyres into various products – such as flooring for playgrounds.

Laboratorio de reciclaje recycles tyres (llantas)
And they also collect electronics waste in partnership with Recitec for electronics recycling.

Laboratorio de reciclaje recycles electronics (electronicos)
They also have something of a showroom for some ecologically friendly technologies, including biogas and plastic (composite) lumber.

I was very happy to discover the excellent-quality, commercial-grade kitchen products that are available at Termalimex in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
They sell products from Robot Coupe, Waring, Hobart, All-American, Tramontia, KitchenAid, Nuova Simonelli, Centerline, Electrolux, Victorinox, Ozti, Carlisle, Browne, etc.
I’m not a big fan of buying cheap plastic kitchen things that you know will break 1-10 years. In Ecuador it’s almost impossible to find durable plastic food storage containers. I was elated to find that Termalimex has normal commercial-quality, graduated round plastic food storage containers made by Carlisle (for ~$10-$40 each).
Summary of what I found:
- Food Storage Containers ($10-$40 each)
- Tramonita and Victorinox Knives ($10-$80)
- Magnetic Knife Holders ($15-$30)
- Various KitchenAid Mixers (up to $1,000)
- Centerline Stand Mixer ($4,091)
- Waring Blender ($2,614)
- Robot Coupe Immersion Blenders
- Robot Coupe Chopper ($2,000-$4,000)
- Waring Belgin Wafflemaker ($661)
- Electrolux Refrigerator ($1,076)
- Ozti Single Basket Door-type High-temp Dishwasher ($4,421)
- Nuova Simonelli Espresso Machines ($4,000-$6,000)
- Pre-rinse faucet hose sprayers ($400-$600)
- All-American Pressure Canners ($500-$800)
- A 2.5 gallon salad spinner ($125)
- Wide selection of large cutting boards
- Alegacy and Tramontia Stainless-Steel Pots
- Large cutting boards
- Various parts to repair above-listed equipment
Unfortunately, I didn’t find a wok. But they did have a good selection of large, heavy stainless-steel pots made by Alegacy and Tramonita.
The customer attention was OK. I asked if they had any low-temp single-basket door-type dishwashers. They didn’t, but the employee took my contact details and said he’d get in-touch with how they could import one. But I never heard back…
